Stained Glass Care Guide

1. Dust Regularly

  • Use a soft, lint-free cloth or brush to gently remove dust, fingerprints, and cobwebs.

2. Clean Gently

  • Soap Solution: Mix warm water with a few drops of pH-neutral dish soap (like Dawn).

  • Specialty Cleaners: Products like Clarity Finishing Compound (carnauba wax) work well.

  • Avoid: Ammonia, vinegar, or acidic cleaners—they will corrode lead and solder.

  • How-To: Apply gently with a soft cloth or brush, rinse with clean water, and dry with a lint-free cloth.

3. Address Oxidation Carefully

  • For white or black oxidation, use a soft brush and mild soap or a specialized cleaner.

  • If there's patina, clean gently to avoid removing the finish.

4. Wax for Protection

  • Apply a thin layer of carnauba wax after cleaning.

  • Let it haze, then buff with a clean cloth for shine and protection.

5. Prevent Damage

  • Avoid hanging stained glass in high humidity areas.

  • Suction cups can fail and cause glass breakage. It's recommended to use alternatives such as secure hanging hooks for heavy pieces or adhesive hooks for light pieces.

Lead Safety:

Solder used in stained glass may contain lead, which is safe to handle but can be harmful if ingested or inhaled. Always wash your hands thoroughly after handling solder, and avoid touching your face, eating, or drinking during handling. Lead-free solder is available, but if you're unsure of the type you're working with, it's best to assume it contains lead and follow proper safety protocols.
